Everyone talks about ULEZ. But while South Africans fixate on whether their London postcodes fall within the Ultra Low Emission Zone boundary, a silent network of Clean Air Zones (CAZs) is expanding across virtually every major UK city.

Bristol, Birmingham, Bath, Sheffield, Portsmouth, Newcastle, Bradford — and growing. If your work involves any travel to these cities, or if you live near one, your vehicle's non-compliance could be costing you money every time you drive in without realising it. Unlike the London ULEZ, CAZ frameworks vary enormously city by city — making each one a separate compliance challenge.

The most dangerous misconception South African expats carry is that a "ULEZ-compliant" car is automatically clean across the entire UK. It usually is — but not always. Each city council sets its own minimum standards, boundary definitions, penalties, and operating hours.

The Key UK Clean Air Zones Explained

Birmingham

Birmingham operates one of the UK's strictest CAZs, covering the city centre and surrounding areas. Non-compliant private cars pay £8 per day. The zone operates 24 hours, 7 days a week. Birmingham's CAZ has resulted in thousands of unexpected charges for drivers who didn't verify compliance before entering.

Bath

Bath's CAZ operates specifically for private cars during the morning and afternoon peaks. Non-compliant vehicles pay £9 per day. Bath applies particularly strict enforcement and has a lower mileage-adjusted charge structure than most other cities.

Bristol

Bristol's CAZ focuses primarily on taxis and commercial vehicles but has expansion on the council's agenda. Private car owners should monitor Bristol's policy closely as the zone continues to develop.

The Rest

Cities including Sheffield, Portsmouth, Newcastle, and Bradford are at various stages of active CAZs. The UK government's Transport Decarbonisation Plan means more cities will legislate CAZs over the coming years. Buying any car without checking its compliance against your regular routes is an increasingly significant financial risk.
