The Conversion Process
The good news: you do not need to take a driving test to convert your SA licence — provided you act within the legal timeframe. The process involves submitting Form D9 to the DVLA, along with your current SA licence, proof of identity, a passport-sized photo, and a postal order for the application fee.
The DVLA's paperwork is incredibly pedantic. Common reasons for rejection include:
- Submitting a photocopy of your licence instead of the original (your SA licence gets returned)
- Using the wrong postal order denomination or address
- Errors or inconsistencies in the D9 form completion
- Sending incorrect identification documents or omitting your Biometric Residence Permit
- Applying after the legal residency timer has already expired
